In the past, the city of Mathura was located on two major routes, one from the north-west to the east and the other from the north to the south. So it was an important centre for trade and travel, and it was fortified (protected with big walls) on all sides.

It has also been an important religious centre. Many Buddhist monasteries, and Jain and Hindu shrines (mostly temples of lord Krishna) are found there.

Many inscriptions on stone or slabs and ancient statues have also been found from Mathura.
