Sir Simon D Canterville was buried with grand, impressive and traditional funeral rites. A funeral started from Canterville Chase at about eleven o'clock at night. The bier was drawn by eight black horses, each of which was adorned with a tuft of ostrich-plumes on its head, and a rich purple pall bearing the embroidered Canterville coat-of-arms, covered the coffin. The servants walked along the hearse carrying lighted torches in their hands. Lord Canterville attended the funeral as the chief mourner. He had come up especially from Wales for the occasion. He and Virginia sat in the first carriage. In the second carriage were Mr. Otis and his wife. In the third carriage were Washington and the three boys, and the last carriage carried Mrs. Umney. She had been allowed to attend his funeral rights because she had put up with him for fifty years. A special grave was dug up under the old yew tree to lay the skeleton of Sir Simon d Canterville. Rev. Augustus Dampier read the last rites for Sir Simon d Canterville.
