Geographical characteristic of Punjab:

Punjab is located under the subtropical latitudinal belt, and is a mostly fertile land with heavy irrigation due to the rivers and alluvial plain. Punjab lies in Northwestern India, bound by Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal, Rajasthan, and Pakistan as its neighbours. The State is mainly fertile with alluvial plains and various rivers that help in irrigation.

A hilly range of hills starts at the Himalayan foot in the northeast part of the state. South-west of the state, which fuses into the Thar Desert, is semiarid. The Shiwalik Hills stretch across the northeast of the Himalayan state. The topography, vegetation, and parent rock have limited influences on the soil characteristics.

Due to regional climatic variability, the changes in soil conditions are far more pronounced. Punjab has been split into three distinct areas depending on the soil types: southwest, north, and north.
