Answer:
Iceland is an exposed area of divergence, called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where two platess are moving away from each other. This causes volcanic areas as well as earthquakes in that region. This is also where new crust is created from molten magma rising and solidifing at the boudary of the two diverging plates. We can tell the magentic alignment in this new magma because as it cools, the iron molecules in the magma align north to south with the current alignment of today before it solidifies. In older Rocks containing iron , the alignment is different by a few degrees and this difference increases as you go further away from the boundary of divergence. Our magnetic poles have reversed many times and the rocks can tell you when it occurred by the alignment of iron molecules in rock.
