They did not eat the brocken pieces of bread which was thrown into then by the Author's mother.These were the significance of sparrows in the grandmother's life.

The grandmother used to feed the sparrows and she was happy to spend time with them.some came and perched on her legs others on her shoulders some even sat on her head, she smile but never shooed them away.

. When grandmother had died, thousands of sparrows had sat all over the place. They did not chirp. There was silence, when author's mother threw them the bread crumbs, the sparrows took no notice of it. When the the body was carried away for cremation, the sparrows flew away quietly.
