The English language changed a great deal after coming in contact with Romans in 43 B.C.E. Because of Romans, the english language had many Latin words in it now. After they left, Germanic tribes came to British isles & hence we have the period of "old english''. In 1099, the Norman's invaded England & French was made number one language. But these languages could not take over english because of the people who still used english in conversations.

English is still changing & the present form of it is known as the 'modern english'.
