It was a custom of South to build a small house near homestead as an annex(a building joined to a larger one) to be used on occasion.Such a house was built after the Civil War by Helen's father and when he married Helen's mother.It was completely covered with vines,climbing roes and honeysuckles.From the garden it looked like an arbor.it was the favourite haunt for humming birds and bees.
