. "The dam was broken" and every body began to run to the east. The author has also given as incident of Dr. Mallory, who heard the sound of the roaring water behind him and started running, but when he looked back to see the water he found that some funny boy was on roller skates. The panic lasted for only two hours when militiaman riding in motor lorries and bawling through megaphones That the dam had not broken and there was no reason for panic and for evacuating the city. Then the people returned to their hut sheepishly.

The day The Dam Broke” is composed by James Groves Thurber who is one the legendary American humourists of contemporary times. He has recorded a number of humorous and entertaining articles. Among his most amazing and interesting books are  “Men, women and dongs”  “The Seal in the Bedroom”, and “Let your mine alone”.

“The Day the Dam Broke” is an enjoyable, engaging, interesting and entertaining short story in which author, JAMES THURBER describes the mob reasoning with great ability.

The author has given an episode of Dr. Mallory, who discovered the sound of the roaring water following him and began running, but when he glanced back to see the water he found that some playful boy was on roller skates.

The panic persisted for only two hours when militiaman traveling in motor lorries and shouting through megaphones That the dam had not happened and there was no cause for panic and for relocating the city. Then the people turned to their cottage sheepishly.

The author wants to bring out the silly and harmful consequences of mob mentality which encourages people to commit great mistakes. It also records that in tragedy, people of sound judgment and profound knowledge also perform in a laughable manner. It proffers an amazing and very practical picture of people’s irrational behavior on hearing an disturbing rumor.
