In the first stanza of the poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is about the free bird. The poet describes the freedom and the way the flies in the open air. The free bird has the capacity and strength to dive and fly in the open air. It can also 'claim the sky' which means that its potential can be seen when it lives in its free space.
