The government was unable to deal with the economic crisis left by the war. In 1923, France occupied the Ruhr Valley, the heartland of Germanindustry, because Germany was unable to pay war reparations demanded by the Treaty of Versailles. The economic  situation in Germany briefly improved between 1924-1929.

Answer:

1) Germany had fought the war largely on loans and had to pay war reparations in gold.

2) This depleted gold reserves at a time resources were scarce.

3) In 1923 Germany refused to pay and the French occupoed its leading industrial area Ruhr to claim their coal. recklessly
