Importance of India's central position on the head of Indian Ocean :-

The importance of India's central position on the Indian Ocean is due to the following reasons.

1) India is located exactly midway between the West Asia and East Asia.

2) It is southward extension of the Asian Continent.

3) The Trans-India Ocean routes connecting the countries of Europe in the West and the developing countries of Asia in the East provide a strategic central position to India.

4) Deccan Peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean. It helped India to establish close contacts with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the Western Coast and with South-East and East Asia from the Eastern Coast. India has the longest coast line on the Indian Ocean. No other country has such a long coast line.

5) India's eminent position in the Indian Ocean justifies the naming of an ocean after it.
