Gandhiji used Khadi as an important factor in India's freedom movement. During the Swadeshi movement Indians boycotted the use of foreign clothes and used home made khadi clothes. Gandhiji himself worn Khadi clothes all his life. He started spinning himself and encouraged others too. He further made chakri the symbol of Nationalist movement. The Khadi promoted socio-cutural aesthetic, an idea that Indians could be self relian on cotton and be free from foreign cloth and clothing. Thus Khadi became a sign of being Indian.
