From the viewpoint of architecture and culture, they represent the synthesis of Islamic and Indian art forms, specially the monuments built by Akbar and his successors. The Chhatris or the pavilions which are so conspicuous in Mughal monuments is typical of structures built by Rajput kings and their incorporation into Mughal structures also represented an accommodation on the part of the Mughal rulers of forms of art which many local people could identify with.
