Some Dominant Features of Political Parties are :

(i) They agree on some policies and programmes for the society with a view to promote the collective good.

(ii) Since there can be different views on what is good for all, parties try to persuade people why their policies are better than others.

(iii) They seek to implement these policies by winning popular support through elections.

(iv) Parties reflect fundamental political divisions in a society.

(v) Parties are a part of society and thus involve partisanship.

(vi) Thus, a party is known by which part it stands for, which policies its supports and whose interests it upholds.

1.) ELECTIONS : Parties contest elections. In most democracies elections are conducted mainly among the candidates put up by political parties. Parties select their candidates in different ways. In some countries such as the United States of America, members and supporters of a party to choose its candidates. Now more and more countries are following this method. In other countries like India top party leaders choose candidates for contesting elections.


2.) TO FORM AND RUN THE GOVERNMENT : Formation of government is one of the aims and functions of a political party. In a parliamentary system, the leader of the party in power becomes the Prime Minister, and he or she appoints the other ministers in his or her cabinet.


3.) DECLARATION OF POLICIES : There are always some socio-economic and political issues before the nation at the domestic and international levels. Political parties put forward the considered views and policies before the people and suggest ways to tackle the issues. Usually parties have their research wings and think-tanks to guide them.


4.) MOULDING PUBLIC OPINION : The parties stimulate the interest of public in the issues before the nation. They use all means of mass communication such as the press, the radio, the television, including the street corner meetings. In this way political parties try to educate, influence and mould public opinion in their favour. Political parties are significant agencies for creating public opinion.


5.) LINK BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT AND THE PEOPLE : Parties provide people access to government machinery and welfare schemes implemented by government. For an ordinary citizen it is easy to operate approach a local party leader than a government officer. That is why they feel close to parties even when they do not fully trust them. Parties have to be responsive to people's needs and demands. Otherwise people can reject this parties in the next elections.
