Abdul Kalam and his childhood friend Ramanadha Sastry were sitting together on the same bench.  

When the new teacher in the Rameswaram elementary school saw a Hindu and a Muslim boy sitting together, he got angry.  

He ordered young Kalam to go back and sit on the last bench.  

This hurt the feeling of these two boys who complained to the school principal.
