Jakanachari was born in the small Karnataka town of Kaidala, 9 kilometres away from Tumkur. According to records, the town's original name was Kridapura. He lived an art-loving, art-dedicated life. Dankanacharya, a son of Jakanachari, was born to his wife. When Dankanacharya was an adult, he became a well-known sculptor and went in search of his father. He sought work as a sculptor at Belur, where he discovered a fault in a statue created by the renowned Jakanacharya himself. Jakanacharya was informed by Dankanacharya that the toad residing inside the stone he was working on was viewed as a defect by the sculptors. Jakanacharya became enraged by this and issued a challenge to cut off his right hand if the young sculptor was accurate in his evaluation of the sculpture. When Dankanacharya chiselled the area of the flaw, a toad leaped out and a trickle of water began to run from it. Testing the illustration revealed the error Jakanacharya honoured his word and severed Dankanacharya's right hand, but Dankanacharya insisted against it. The two sculptors eventually recognise that they are father and son.
