Carrying out the duties of a good friend, Jerome hired a cab to transport the cheeses from Liverpool to London. The horse harnessed to the cab could only shamble because of decrepitude. However, as soon as it turned the corner, the wind carried the pungent stink of the cheeses to his nose; the stink so much terrified the horse that it began cantering at four miles an hour. It took two porters and the cab driver to control the horse at the station, where Jerome had to get off the cab with his cheeses.
