Describe the incident which took place at Rama Rao’s house when they bought a bundle of firewood from a woman?

This question is from the chapter Ranga’s Marriage by Masti Venktash Iynegar. He is narrating an incident from his village. He was at Rama Rao’s house when they bought a bundle of firewood. Rama Rao’s son came out to pay for it. He asked the woman how much was to be paid for it.  The woman said the cost was four pice. The boy told her he did not have any “change”, and asked her to come the next day. The poor woman did not understand the English word “change” and went away muttering to herself.  

Even the author himself didn’t know what the word “change” meant at that time.
