A number of people had assembled at Jallianwala bagh for: 1) Some came to protest against the government's new repressive measures(Rowlatt Act)
2) Others came to attend the annual Baisakhi fair.
Many villagers (who came from outside the city) didn't knew the Martial Act that was imposed.
General Dyer surrounded the park and opened fire on the crowd , killing hundreds of people.
EFFECTS OF THE MASSACRE:-
As the news of Jallianwala Bagh spread, crowd took to the streets in many North-Indian towns.
There were strikes, clashes with the police.
Attacks on government buildings were reported.
The government responded with brutal repression: Satyagrahis were forced to rub their noses on the ground, crawl on the streets and do salute to all sahibs.
People were flogged and villages were bombed.
This gruesome tragedy earned wide-spread hatred among masses towards Britishers.
It spread the discontentment and gave rise to country-wide movement.
