Village Panchayat has been given the jurisdiction by the indian constitution to decide cases related only to the villages coming under its jurisdiction. They can hear cases of riots, dacoits and other family problems only. They can impose fine upto a maximum of Rs. 100. No appeal against their decisions can be made further in any other higher court of law. This provision is made since the gram panchayat mostly consists of the most intelluect persons of the village who give the correct judgement and hence not to waste the time of the higher courts in deciding such petty cases.
