describe the kalinga war in ashoka and did the effect to the Ashoka's life???
Answers
Kalinga war had played a significant role in shaping Ashoka's tolerant policy towards his people. Infact, it was the only major war fought by Ashoka after ascending the throne. According to him, 100,000 people were killed in the course of it, several lakhs died, and 150,000 were taken as prisoners. These numbers are exaggerated, because the number ‘a hundred thousand’ is used as a cliche in Ashokan inscriptions.
However, it appears that Ashoka was deeply moved by the massacre in this war. The war caused great suffering to the brahmana priests and Buddhist monks, and this in turn brought upon Ashoka much grief and remorse. He therefore abandoned the policy of physical occupation in favour of one of cultural conquest. In other words, bherighosha was replaced with dhammaghosha, which was similar to the then buddhism and he vastly promoted it not only in India but also in the neighbouring countries like srilanka, China, Nepal etc. Infact, he sent his own son and daughters to different countries in order to promote his dhamma, which many historians and scholars say was one of the major reasons for the decline of Mauryan Empire.
