The Kalinga War was a war fought between the Mauryan Empire and the state of Kalinga. Kalinga was an important kingdom because it controlled the trade routes with Southeast Asia. Because of this, Ashoka, the Mauryan king, wanted to capture it. Therefore he lead his huge army to Kalinga in 261 BC.

hiiiii friend!!!!
The reason behind the war of Kalinga was 2 extend the boundaries of ‘Magadh’ kingdom. Kalinga was a powerful kingdom, Magadh was ranking second in power after Kalinga kingdom. Kalinga was situated on the upper boundary of India today covering whole of Orrisa. The Asoka was not the first king who attempted 2 conquer kingdom of Kalinga. Before Asoka, Chandragupta Morya his grandfather attacked on kingdom of Kalinga. But he was unsuccessful in his attempt. It is also said that in the time of ‘Mahabharat’, Arjun have conquered the kingdom of Kalinga. And in the time of ‘Ramayana’ it was a part of ‘Ayodhya’ the kingdom of Lord ‘Rama’. ‘Kauravki’ who is shown in movie ‘Ashoka’ & played by the actress ‘Kareena Kapoor’ was a princess of Kalinga kingdom. Later she married with ‘Ashoka’.
i hope it may help u!!!
