The life history of a silk moth starts when a female silk moth lays eggs. The larvae or caterpillars hatched from the eggs of the silk moth. These silkworms feed on fresh mulberry leaves the silkworm grows in size and then becomes a pupa. In the pupa stage, it weaves a net to hold itself.

The lifecycle of silk moth consists of Egg, silkworm, cocoon, Pupa and Moth.

Explanation:

  • The life cycle of the silk moth begins when the female silk moth will start laying eggs.
  • It is called as caterpillar which will start hatching eggs from the silk moth.
  • The next process is the silkworms will feed on leaves of mulberry and give rise to the pupa.
  • During, the pupa stage it will form a layer of the weave which will be netted on the silkworm and it begins to hold on itself.
  • Then, it swings its head, forming a fiber by spinning which is healthy protein and helps in forming of fiber silk.
  • The caterpillar has layer which is protective and wrapped around the pupa and this covered layer is called cocoon.
  • The yarn or silk thread will be obtained through the silk moth’s cocoon.
  • There are five stages in lifecycle of silk moth:

1) Egg:

This is the first stage. Here, the egg is seen to be laid by female moth and mostly the size of dots that are small in nature. The female moth lays approximately 350 eggs at a time.

2) Silkworm:

It arises the eggs when the cracking of eggs takes place. The silkworms eat from leaves of mulberry, in large amount and lasts for 30 days’ time period.

3) Cocoon:

It is the third stage, when silkworm begins to start spinning cocoon and in the size of a cotton ball of silk.

4) Pupa:

This is called the motionless stage when the pupa is killed and added into the boiling water to get the thread of the silk.

5) Moth:

In this final stage, the pupa begins to turn into adult and the eggs begins to get laid. The final lifecycle of silkworm will begin once again.
