Explanation:
in Chapter 1, when he places a phone call from Pakistan to his friend Amir in America. We learn nothing about him here, as the chapter instead sets up an extended flashback to Amir's youth in Afghanistan. In time, though, we come to learn more about Rahim Khan.
During Amir's childhood, Rahim is a frequent visitor thanks to his friendship and partnership with Baba, Amir's father. Baba is a force to be reckoned with--in fact, Rahim calls him 'Mr. Hurricane.' He is an imposing, strong figure, full of bluster and strong opinions. Few dare to cross him, but Rahim has a special relationship with Baba. Rahim is able to stand up to Baba and has earned his respect. In Chapter 3, Rahim tells Baba that he can be the most self-centered person he knows. According to Amir, Rahim Khan ''was the only person I knew who could get away with saying something like that to Baba.''
Baba, with all his intensity, success, and strong opinions, is a difficult father to have. Amir is forever trying to please him, and coming up short. Instead, Rahim fills the role of nurturing father figure to Amir and helps fulfill the boy's need for acceptance and encouragement. It's Rahim who encourages Amir's writing.
One day, Amir approaches Baba and Rahim with a story he wrote clenched in his hands. Baba can barely fake interest in the story, and Amir waits hopefully, anguished, feeling as if time has slowed down. Baba just stares at him and does not ask to read the story. Then Rahim steps up, asking to see it. ''As always,'' Amir says, ''it was Rahim Khan who rescued me.''
Later, Rahim gives Amir a note praising the story and stating ''God has granted you a special talent.'' Amir is so pleased with Rahim's reaction that he guiltily admits to wishing Rahim Khan were his father. The note ends with Rahim telling Amir, ''I shall hear any story you have to tell. Bravo.'' This kind of encouragement is what Amir has always been lacking in his relationship with Baba.
