Bastar is located in southern part of the present state of Chhattisgarh. Many different tribal communities like the Gonds, Dhurwas, Bhatras and Halbas lived in the region. These communities used the forest produce for satisfying their basic needs. Some communities even practiced shifting cultivation. This was their general pattern of life before the British came to India. During the colonial period, the forests were declared as reserved forests, many villages lying in the vicinity of the forests were displaced.
