The lines of longitude are vertical lines which run from North the South.
Each line of longitude divides the earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres.
The Prime Meridian which passes through a laboratory in Greenwich (hence know as Greenwich meridian)is the most important longitude.

The local time of a place depends on the central longitude or meridian or the meridian on which the most important city is located.

The time difference between 1 degree of longitudanal extent is 4 minutes
They are also called great circles..Great circle is a circle which divides the earth into two hemispheres. therefore the equator is also a great circle.

The shortest route between any 2 places is along the arc of the great circle which passes through them

Ships and aircrafts use great circles to the extent possible.
They don't always prove to be useful. The great circle route can't always be followed owing to restrictions imposed by countries on flying over their air space.
