The location and extent of the Veld:

  • Velds are vast open grassland with rolling plateaus in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.  
  • They are large areas with grasslands and low shrubs with very few trees. The plains consist of plateaus which are between the heights of 600 m to 1100 m.
  • The velds are famous for ‘cattle rearing and mining’. People grow maize, barley, potatoes and oats which are the main crops in this region.
  • There are rich reserves of minerals found in these regions. The climate is mild which is influenced by the Indian Ocean and the winters are cold and dry and they receive rainfall in the summer months.
