This is because the peninsular region has provided maritime access to three different continents (viz Africa, Australia and Europe) excluding Asia (Europeans had to to take the difficult route around Africa before Suez canal came into existence ).This position has been beneficial to India since ancient times for trading with the world.Indian diplomacy has been strengthened by its unique location. Its maritime prowess makes it a regional power in southeast Asia.
