Portia 's father made a lottery of caskets which would decide her husband.
The lottery of caskets contained three boxes which were made up of gold , silver and lead.
Her father decided that who ever loves portia may come in belmont and make achoice of casket. One of the three casket contained her portrait and whoever who choses correct one may win portia and woo her in the name of marriage. But before making the choice , every suitor has to take 3 oath which were:
1. If the suitor loses then he would never look upon a lady in the name of marriage.
2.He will not tell anybody about the casket he chose.
3. He will leave immediately after losing the lottery.
