Hi,
Your answer :
This chronology is part of the thematic file: The Treaty of Vienna (October 14, 1809), Franco-Austrian treaty that ended the Austrian campaign of Napoleon of 1809. This Treaty of Vienna concludes our series of files on this campaign which is made of :
The Battle of Aspern-Essling, The Battle of Wagram and Napoleon and the Tyrol.
July 4-6: The Battle of Wagram
Having taken his place on Napoleon Island, the emperor turned the site into a real fortress with large pieces of art taken from Vienna's arsenal. The French troops are preparing to face the Archduke Charles who had advanced his own from June 30 north of Aspern and Essling. The latter is convinced that Napoleon will use the same strategy as in May and will unload his troops in the plain of Marchfeld. Also, Archduke Charles occupies and organizes the villages of Aspern, Essling and Enzersdorf. A diversion made by Masséna on June 30 confirms this idea. But on July 3, seeing that the French offensive did not develop, he retired to the heights north of Russbach.
On July 4 at 9:30 pm, Napoleon began the crossing of the Danube by his troops, under a violent storm. On the 5th of July at 6 o'clock in the morning, Oudinot, Masséna and the Friant division of Davout's corps passed on the left bank. There are more than 30,000 men in the north. Until 9am, the bridges of Enzersdorf, Wittau and Mühllein are under French control. The French deployed in a quarter circle, the right at Russbach, the left near the Danube. The Austrians stand outside this quarter circle, parallel to the French line. The most important mission is entrusted to Masséna and his 5th corps, since he alone will have to cover the entire left wing of the device. At 19h, the Molitor division reached Breitenlee, Boudet reached Kagern, Carra St. Cyr, Leopoldau, and Legrand, Sussenbrünn. The body of Masséna alone holds a front of 7 to 8 km. But while deploying, the French troops are weakened to the right of the Austrians who do not miss to walk on Aspern.
Good bye :)
