At the beginning of the 20th Century, Russia was easily the most backward country in Europe. Ruled by an autocratic and unresponsive Czar and managed by an onerous public bureaucracy, an oppressive military apparatus and a burgeoning aristocracy while the majority of the country lived in dreadful poverty, the Russian people decided they had had enough. So they revolted. They took over the country, killed the czar and his family, and reorganized the government. Of course there’s more to it than this; it’s a difficult subject. But there are a number of good books out there. Along with the dropping of the A-Bomb on Hiroshima, the Russian Revolution must go down as the most dramatic event of the twentieth century, and possibly of all time.
