The main features of Charles Booth’s social survey of low-skilled London workers are as follows:
1.In 1887, Charles Booth, a Liverpool shipowner conducted the first social survey of low skilled workers at the east end of London. He found out that as many as 1 million Londoners (or one fifth of the population of London at that time) were very poor.
2. The average life expectancy among the poor was about 29 years of age. On the other hand, the average life expectancy of the middle classes and gentry was about 55 years.
3.These people were more likely to die in a workhouse, hospital or a lunatic Asylum.
4. It was required to be at least 400,000 rooms in London to provide housing to its poorest citizens.
