The Vedic philosophy notes that the pillars of a human life are reality, nonviolence, restraint, penance and spiritual upliftment. Terms such as knowledge awakening, humility, modesty, etc. are often used in the Vedic era to describe training. Ancient texts refer as an arrogant beast to the uneducated person and education is seen as the light source.

The main features include -

1.  No state control over education:- Country rulers had very little directive towards the education. It was a people's private affairs solely handled by Brahmans.

2. Teachers  high status:-Teachers were a highly respected class, even kings honored. Kings grew to receive great teachers like Narada, Vashishtha and Vishwamitra.

3. Residential schools:- Teachers and students lived together and thus identified with each other.

4. Immediate goal:- Vocational studies,however, the immediate goal of education was to prepare the different casts of people for their real life needs.
