Main features of Poona Pact:
- The Poona Pact allocated 148 seats to depressed classes, however, communal award promised 71 seats only.
- A 'percentage of seats' allotted to 'general non-Muslims' would be reserved for 'depressed classes'.
- Congress agreed to give adequate representation to depressed classes in civil services.
- The depressed classes accepted the 'principle of joint electorate'.
Poona Pact was signed between 'Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar' and Mahatama Gandhi in 1932 in the backdrop of the Communal Award announced by the British government. The depressed classes were given more seats in return for the joint electorate. The communal award announced proposed separate electorate for depressed classes because the British government worked on the principle of “Divide and Rule”.
