The Northern Plain was formed by the deposits brought in by the three major rivers and their tributaries. Alluvium was deposited at the foot–hills of the Himalayas for millions of years. These deposits are now the fertile Northern Plains. Alluvium is soil or sediments deposited by a river or other running water.

The three river systems in the Northern plains from East to West are the Brahmaputra, the Ganga and the Indus systems.
Indus River System
A large part of the Indus system lies in Pakistan. The Indus and its tributaries - Jhelum, Chenab,
Ravi, Beas and Saduj originate in the Himalayas. This section of the plain is dominated by che doabs.
Ganges River System
The Ganga plain extends berween the Ghaggar
and Teesta rivers. It spreads over the States of Haryana, Delhi, Untar Pradesh, Bihar, part of Jharkhand and West Bengal. It has tributaries like the Yamuna, Gomaci, Son, Gandak and Kosi.
The Brahmaputra River System
The Brahmaputra plain lies in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, where it is joined by its tributaries like the Lohit, Raidak and Sankosh.
