.After the outbreak of the mutiny in Meerut, the rebels quickly reached Delhi, whose 81-year-old Mughal ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was declared the Emperor of Hindustan. Soon, the rebels had captured large tracts of the North-Western Provinces and Awadh (Oudh). The East India Company's response came rapidly as well. With help from reinforcements, Kanpur was retaken by mid-July 1857, and Delhi by the end of September. However, it then took the remainder of 1857 and the better part of 1858 for the rebellion to be suppressed in Jhansi, Lucknow, and especially the Awadh countryside.

The revolt that took place in Jhansi and Lucknow was horrendous in which both the cities were captured.

  • Lucknow- In the state of Awadh, which was only recently annexed and is now known as Oudh in modern-day Uttar Pradesh, experienced insurrection very shortly after the events in Meerut.
  • Sir Henry Lawrence, the British Commissioner in residence at Lucknow, had enough time to secure his position inside the Residency grounds.
  • There were about 1700 men on the defense, including devoted sepoys. After failing in their attacks, the rebels started firing muskets and artillery into the compound.
  • One of the first casualties was Lawrence. John Eardley Inglis succeeded him as president.
  • The rebels attempted to destroy the barriers with explosives and get around them by tunneling beneath them, where they engaged in a close battle.
  • Jhansi-A princely state in Bundelkhand under Maratha domination was known as Jhansi State.
  • The Governor-General of India used the doctrine of lapse to annex Jhansi to the British Raj in 1853 after the Raja of Jhansi passed away without a biological male successor.
  • The Rani of Jhansi, his widow Rani Lakshmi Bai, protested the rejection of their adopted son's rights.
  • Jhansi soon rose to prominence as the center of the uprising when war broke out.
  • The Rani arranged for the departure of a small group of Company executives and their families who took sanctuary in Jhansi Fort.
  • The rebels, over whom the Rani had no authority, slaughtered them as soon as they left the fort, and the British believed the Rani was culpable despite her repeated protestations.
