The Happy Prince, while telling the swallow of every misery he saw in his kingdom, told him of a little match-girl the Prince could see from his tall pedestal.
The girl had no shoes or stockings, and her little head was bare, even when it was such a cold night. She had let her matches fall into the gutter by mistake and now was crying, as her father would beat her if she brought home no money.
The Happy Prince asked the swallow to drop his remaining sapphire eye into her hands so that it may bring her warmth and happiness.
