Blood normally remains in its liquid state while it is within blood vessels but when it leaves them the blood may thicken and form a gel (coagulation). Blood clotting (technically "blood coagulation") is the process by which (liquid) blood is transformed into a solid state. The mechanism of blood clotting is a complex process involving many clotting factors (incl. calcium ions, enzymes, platelets, damaged tissues) activating each other.

Blood clotting is a physiological mechanism in which the platelets align together on the wound or injury and forms a clot to prevent the further loss of blood from the wound.

Explanation:

  • The mechanism of blood clotting is called as coagulation. The blood changes its form from liquid to gel form so as to form a clot.
  • The platelets form a plug at the site of injury, the release of plasma factor VII causes the formation of cross-linked fibrin bridge. This will form of platelet plug. This prevents the loss of blood and facilitates the wound healing process.
