Describe the mechanism of breathing in humans.​

Inspiration is the process of inhaling oxygen. When we breathe in, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward. This increases the space in the chest cavity into which our lungs expand. Thus the intercostal muscles between the ribs enlarge the chest cavity.

The breathing in human beings takes place through the organs called lungs. The  taking in air rich in oxygen into the body during breathing is called 'inhalation' and  giving out (or expelling) the air rich in carbon dioxide is called 'exhalation'. Both, inhalation  and exhalation take place regularly during breathing.
