The term 'Monsoon' typically means ' Season'. But it is generally used to denote seasonal change due to change in direction of the prevailing winds, mostly in the regions around Indian Ocean. ( India and South Asia).
During summer season, air gets heated up and rises. This creates a low pressure on the land surface. Relatively, the temperature over the ocean in cool and hence a high pressure zone exists. The wind move from high pressure ocean to low pressure land and contain moisture. So, rainfall occurs. The direction of this wind is South-West to North-East.
Whereas, during Winter season, the vice-versa process occurs. Rainfall is received due to North-East Trade winds. The direction of this wind is reversed and causing the seasonal change and rainfall.
