The megalodon was a massive shark. The largest were roughly 60 feet in length and attained perhaps up to 50 tons, the size and weight of a railroad car. Female megalodons were, on average larger, at about 44 to 56 feet (13-17 m) and males were about 34 to 47 feet (10-14 m).
The measurements taken confirm that the maximum size of a megalodon was about 50 to 60 feet. For reference, that's somewhere between the length of a tractor trailer (48 feet) and a bowling lane (63 feet).
Most reconstructions show megalodon looking like an enormous great white shark. This is now believed to be incorrect. O. megalodon likely had a much shorter nose, or rostrum, when compared with the great white, with a flatter, almost squashed jaw
