At times, in the water from ponds or lakes the suspended particles like sand or soil particles present in the dirty water do not quickly settle down at the bottom that is, it takes to decant them. Therefore, in order to make such particles settle down at the bottom at the earliest or to make the particles heavier in weight, alum is mixed into the water and water is decanted soon. It is called as sedimentation method. The water of pond or lake can be purified by this method.
