Nepal which is one of the third wave countries is democratic from 1990. Even though it was democratic the real power was in hands of the elected representatives of the King. A movement which aimed at restoring democracy was held in April 2006.

The Background:

King Birendra accepted constitutional monarch but he was mysteriously killed in 2001. King Gyanendra was sworn in as the new king, but he didn't accept the concept of democratic rule. He dismissed the Prime Minister and dissolved the Parliament, by taking advantage of the government's weakness and unpopularity.

Nepalese Movement of April 2006:

Aim: Regaining the control from the king and providing control to the government.

All the major political parties joined together to form Seven Part Alliance and announced 4-day strike in Kathmandu. Supported by several other organisations the protest turned into an indefinite strike. Demands of the moments were,

  • Parliament restoration
  • A new constituent assembly and
  • Provision of power to an all-party government.

The king was forced to satisfy all the three demands. Girija Prasad Koirala was chosen as the New PM of the interim government.
