After he flew into the storm, the narrator couldn't see anything outside the plane. His plane jumped and twisted in the air. He observed that his compass was turning round and round. ... Suddenly, he saw another aeroplane which was black and it had no lights.

Answer:
In the chapter the Black Aeroplane the poor decides to take a risk and fly through the storm. As he flew through it he felt his small plane wobble around like a toy and his instruments weren't working anymore and he had only a bit of fuel left. So he felt afraid and waded uncertain about what he should do.
Hope it helps...
