Nitrogen is fixed naturally by the process of lightning and nitrogen cycle. The atmospheric nitrogen is now fixed in the soil but not in a form that could be used by plants so a bacteria called rhizobium fixes this to usable form for plants. The plants use the nitrogen and excrete it which is then sent back to atmosphere and the cycle continues.
