Thanks for the “ask to answer”.

Coming to your question, I am for the time being, answering it in simple terms. Let us consider a particle vibrating in Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM). Now we want to have a complete overview of its probable dynamics. In order to have it, we must find out both its position and direction of motion. It is here that “PHASE” comes into play- the term encompasses both the specifications.

“Phase (in SHM) is defined as the state of a particle pertaining to its position and direction of motion.”

Now in quantitative terms, PHASE can be defined in 2 distinct ways. Since you asked only about “PHASE ANGLE”, I am leaving out the “TIME-FRACTION” definition.

As you already know, a particle vibrating in SHM has its corresponding circle of reference. To know the “PHASE ANGLE”, we affix starting position of radius vector as that moment when particle executing SHM is on the verge of crossing mean position.

To understand the concept of “PHASE ANGLE”, see the figure below,

We are assuming it to be the “CIRCLE OF REFERENCE” for the particle in SHM. Position A is the initial position of the radius vector. At positions B,C,D, .........., the radius vector has turned through angles π/4, π/2, 3π/4.................respectively. Note that all the angles mentioned above can be expressed uniquely as a fraction of 2π. This leads us to our quantitative definition of ” PHASE ANGLE” being the angle turned by the radius vector from the starting position. So now, according to the definition, PHASE of particle at positions A,B,C can be assigned as 0(or 2π), π/4, π/2.....and so on.

Hope the meaning of the term “PHASE ANGLE” is clear now.

I hope you are understand my solution
