The oxidation of ferrous sulphate by molecular oxygen under zinc pressure-leach conditions has been investigated. The effects of the variables temperature, acid concentration, zinc sulphate concentration, copper sulphate concentration and the addition of various sulphate salts were studied. An overall equation to describe the rate of ferrous oxidation was proposed and is included below. This equation accounts for: (1) the higher reactivity of the ferrous sulphate ion pair relative to the free ferrous ion; (2) the catalysis of the reaction by copper; and (3) the activation energy of the reaction:
