Axil:

An axil is the angle between the upper side of a leaf and the stem from which it grows.

Axil helps to locate the bud, because in flowering plants buds develop in the axils of leaves.

Stem:

The functions of the stem are to support the leaves; to conduct water and minerals to the leaves, where they can be converted into usable products by photosynthesis; and to transport these products from the leaves to other parts of the plant, including the roots.

Leaf edge/ Margin:

The edge of the leaf is called the margin. Parts of a leaf: A leaf may seem simple in appearance, but it is a highly-efficient structure.

Vein and venules:

Veins transport water and glucose around the plant.

The blade is supported by a system of veins that also contain both xylem and phloem. These veins prevent the blade from collapsing under its own weight. A leaf is often organized with one main vein running down the middle of the blade.

Petiole:

The petiole is the stalk that attaches the leaf blade to the stem, and is able to twist the leaf to face the sun.

This gives a characteristic foliage arrangement to the plant. Outgrowths appearing on each side of the petiole in some species are called stipules.

Midrib:

A midrib provides strength throughout the leaf, keeping it upright and sturdy in the wind.
