➜ The incident took place in a big city in the valley of a mountain, some thousand five hundred miles from the narrator's home-town.

➜ He lived in a very small dingy room on a dirty street in this city. He says the people of the city never knew the quality of mercy.

➜ They were cruel with murder, robbery and pickpocketing being daily occurrences. By tradition the people were professional soldiers. Some of them went to distant places and lent money on interest.

➜ Many others served as watchmen in banks, mills and large commercial establishments in big cities. The people valued money a great deal and for this they would do anything even commit murder.
