Chawls were a common characterstic of Bombay. They were one-room houses with no private toilets given to anxious migrants in the city by landlords.
Even when there were harsh conditions in chawls , it is observed that they were kept quite clean , despite the daily queue at the water tap. It was a place where people used to exchange news about jobs , strikes , daily affairs and even for riots. Akharas came up at any empty spot for physical and mental fitness.
